Climate Protection in the Building Sector
The German Energy Agency (dena) publishes the dena Building Report every year — a current snapshot of how far the construction industry still is from the Paris climate targets. After all, buildings in Germany are meant to be climate-neutral by 2030. For the 2023 report, we created three infographics, each comparing three data sets. At the same time, they’re visually appealing enough to make the topic accessible even to non-experts. We don’t leave readers alone with the detail-rich information: a reading example walks through the infographic step by step. The Most Telling Numbers
dena supplies us with data for three infographics. The topics are: 1. energy consumption, 2. sources and causes of CO2 in the building sector, and 3. the growth of residential and non-residential space in Germany in 2022. On their own, the data sit in tables and barely tell a story. Together with dena, we sort out which data should be shown together in one infographic. Then we put the data into perspective: which figures stand out once we relate them per capita? How can we represent different statements? Each of the three infographics has a different focus and at least three layers that need to be comparable with one another. We experiment with shapes, colors, areas, and sizes to distinguish between different data.
The Right Shape for Every Infographic
We settle on a pie chart, a distinctive shape reminiscent of a cloud, and a map of Germany. The pie chart shows energy consumption in Germany and combines the data: sectors (private households, businesses, etc.), application (what the energy is used for), and energy source (renewable, gas, nuclear, etc.).
The cloud shape represents greenhouse gas emissions and breaks them down by source and cause. Where are the hidden CO2 sources, and who causes them? The map of Germany shows the growth in residential and non-residential building space. Each infographic comes with a reading example, so the target audience — the public, policymakers, NGOs — can use one example to work out how to read the infographic. We optimize the infographics for both online and print media — the dena Building Report is published as a printed booklet and as a PDF. In total, the report visualizes more than 500 data points across more than 50 infographics and has already been downloaded more than 20,000 times.
