Data Stories on the “Valuing the Environment” Platform

The Federal Ministry for the Environment has a treasure trove of data – on environmental protection, climate change, mobility, and more. But the data is hard to understand and unorganized. We cluster the data into topics and the topics into stories. The result: the microsite “Valuing the Environment” (username: sapera, password: werteumwelt). Readers quickly find the 14 stories through an intuitive content wheel. We build up each environmental topic to be light and accessible: text, interactive infographics, and illustrations alternate. This gives readers an appetite for environmental policy content, developments, and connections – from fashion to mobile networks.

Uncovering the Data Treasure

We survey the available sources and data: what can we use effectively for a compelling story? In a joint workshop with the BMUV, we let the data inspire us. Step by step, we filter out topic areas. User interviews help us build personas and map the user journey.

A Distinct Style – A Consistent Structure

Each story gets its own visual language, a color spectrum, and a selection of infographics. We sketch out the stories on a storyboard. From the topic of “species conservation,” for example, we extract the story of the wolf’s return to Germany. For recognizability, the structure of the stories on the Valuing the Environment platform is consistent: text, infographics, and illustrations alternate.

The User Experience in Detail

We break open complex content like raw material extraction and environmental costs through interactive infographics. Illustrations, for example in slideshows, make the stories emotionally accessible on a visual level. Through features like sliders and toggle switches, readers interact with the content and discover the messages behind it. Hover effects give them direct access to the data sources. This builds trust and lets them dive deeper into the subject – an important advantage for the target audience of journalists and educators. We ensure accessibility with high-contrast colors, easily readable typography, alt text for every illustration, and info text for every data visualization – optimized for screen readers.

Great ideas start with a conversation.
