Energy Transition
Dechema e. V.
The Kopernikus Projects are one of Germany’s largest research initiatives on the energy transition. Their goal: a climate-neutral Federal Republic by 2045. On behalf of DECHEMA Gesellschaft für Chemische Technik und Biotechnologie e. V., we visualize what the future could look like. Using illustrations, icons and text, we show readers in an accessible way the connections between the individual Kopernikus Projects and their long-term solutions. We create a richly illustrated, two-page vision poster in the form of a map that harmoniously combines all visual elements and text. Building on the vision poster, we develop an interactive mega-map in a follow-up project. Here, users can learn more about the energy transition through multimedia audio and video content.
Task
Clear and accessible visualization of all Kopernikus Projects and their contribution to the energy transition
Solution
Vision poster, interactive mega-map, audio and video content

Analysis, Clustering, Illustration, Icons, Text
Analysis of Extensive Input
Our editorial team reviews the extensive material and sorts the information into topic clusters. Points of interest quickly emerge – points where the most important information is bundled. The challenge for the design team is to depict everything in a single graphic: the points of interest, how the areas of politics, transport and energy should be delineated from one another, and which Kopernikus Projects are involved.
How We Create Clarity
We quickly decided on the form of a map. This lets users move around intuitively and absorb information about the energy transition. A color system assigns the areas of politics, transport and energy, as well as the Kopernikus Projects. For clarity, all the text is kept in one place. The illustrations also show elements inside buildings, such as details within a chemical plant.
The Interactive Mega-Map
Building on the two-page vision poster, we develop an interactive mega-map. Through additional audio and video content, readers learn more about the Kopernikus Projects, climate neutrality and the energy transition by 2045. Visually, we add a new industrial park, and the sea becomes visible as an important energy factor. The research map now depicts more than 100 projects at over 50 research institutions, making more than 500 data points accessible.
